Father, Educator, Lawyer

"The City of Springfield is at a pivotal moment in the crossroads of our history. How we develop in the coming years will shape not just the economic future of our great city, but will also have lasting impacts for years to come.”

I'm Justin Hurst, a father of two boys, a lawyer, and a former educator in our public schools. I was born and raised in Springfield and educated in the Springfield Public School system. I am the devoted husband of School Committee member Denise M. Hurst and the proud father of Justin J. Hurst Jr. and Jackson Douglas Hurst. I am committed to ensuring that my children have the same opportunities growing up in this great city that I was afforded.

As a concerned citizen, educator, and small business owner in this city for many years, I have thought long and hard about ways to have a greater impact on the citizens of Springfield. Having witnessed it first-hand through my parents’ involvement in politics for many years, I understand how strong leadership can affect this city. Recognizing the city's current challenges, I firmly believe that we must prioritize attracting and retaining families for Springfield to have a true renaissance. My experience and skill set equip me to forge the next leadership chapter in Springfield. I have been a staunch advocate for systemic change and transparent government that serves all of our communities.

I was first elected to the Springfield City Council in 2013. With the support from my colleagues, I was unanimously voted in as President of the City Council, where I served in 2019 and 2020. I'm proud to have sponsored resolutions that elevate our city. This includes equitable distribution of ARPA funding for our families, small businesses, and transportation system. I've led efforts calling for living wages for our paraprofessionals, signed letters supporting improved conditions for our nurses and patients, and brokered deals to pass a military leave for city employees. As a lawyer, I have experience challenging the city's highest offices and pushing back against the business-as-usual politics with a focus on accountability, public safety, and quality of life issues. I have called for our police to be represented on the District Attorney's Strategic Action and Focused Enforcement team (SAFE) to promote and build safer streets, neighborhoods, and communities across our city. With the support of my colleagues, I led the effort in establishing a police commission that keeps our law enforcement from engaging in waste, fraud, and abuse. I successfully pushed back on administrative efforts that stalled this crucial check and balance.

I reside in Springfield with my wife and sons. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Virginia, a Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.G.S) in administration from the University of Massachusetts, and my Juris Doctorate from Western New England University School of Law.
